Every June 12, Filipinos celebrate Philippine Independence Day, commemorating the country’s declaration of independence from Spain in 1898. While the Philippine Revolution is often remembered through battles on land, naval forces also played an important role in the fight for freedom.

As an island nation, the Philippines has always depended on maritime routes for communication, trade, and defense. During the revolution, Filipino leaders realized that controlling the seas was essential in sustaining the fight against colonial powers. This led to the creation of the Philippine Revolutionary Navy under General Emilio Aguinaldo in 1898, making it the first naval force established by Filipinos.

After the declaration of independence in Kawit, Cavite, the role of the navy became even more important. The young republic needed to defend its ports and territorial waters from foreign threats.

This Philippine Independence Day, we honor not only the heroes of the revolution on land, but also the courageous Filipino sailors and the Revolutionary Navy who fought for freedom across our seas. Their bravery and sacrifice continue to inspire the Filipino people today as guardians of our nation and maritime heritage.
