Flag Day in the Philippines: Celebrating Freedom and Patriotism

Every May 28, the Philippines celebrates National Flag Day, a special day dedicated to honoring the country’s national flag and the heroes who fought for freedom. This celebration reminds Filipinos of the bravery, unity, and patriotism that shaped the nation’s history.

The observance begins on May 28, which marks the anniversary of the Battle of Alapan in 1898. During this historic event, Filipino revolutionary forces led by Emilio Aguinaldo achieved victory against Spanish troops in Cavite. The celebration continues until June 12, the country’s Independence Day (National Commission on Indigenous Peoples, 2021).

On June 12, 1898, Philippine independence from Spain was proclaimed in Kawit, Cavite. During the ceremony, the Philippine flag was proudly waved while the national anthem was played for the first time.

Throughout the Flag Days period, Filipinos are encouraged to display the national flag in homes, schools, offices, and public places as a symbol of love for the country. The Philippine flag represents important values: blue stands for peace and justice, red symbolizes courage and patriotism, white means equality and purity, while the sun and stars represent freedom and the unity of the nation.

National Flag Days serve as a reminder that freedom was achieved through sacrifice and courage. By honoring the Philippine flag, Filipinos continue to celebrate the nation’s independence, history, and pride.
