October is declared as the National Indigenous Peoples Month, a time to celebrate the diverse cultures, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples across the Philippines.
As a maritime nation made up of thousands of islands, the Philippines has a deep and enduring connection to the sea. For many Indigenous communities, the ocean, rivers, and coastal environments are not just simply part of the landscape, they are also part of their identity, livelihood, culture, and way of life.

Indigenous communities such as the Sama-Dilaut, Ivatan, Tagbanua, and Tausug carry generations of traditional knowledge connected to fishing, boatbuilding, navigation, and the sustainable use of marine resources. Their stories and practices offer valuable insights into the long relationship between Filipino communities and the waters that surround us.

At AIMS Museo Maritimo, we believe that understanding our maritime heritage means recognizing the many communities whose lives and traditions have been shaped by the sea. Indigenous knowledge is an important part of the story of the Philippines as a maritime nation.
This National Indigenous Peoples Month, let us take the opportunity to listen, learn, and appreciate the traditions and knowledge passed down through generations. By preserving these stories, we help ensure that the rich cultural and maritime heritage of the Philippines continues to be remembered and valued by future generations.
Our maritime heritage is more than ships and voyages as it also reflects the story of people, cultures, and communities connected by the sea.
