As the Asian Institute of Maritime Studies (AIMS) marks its 32nd Foundation Anniversary alongside the celebration of National Arts Month, the campus is not only looking back with pride — it is inviting the community to rediscover the story that connects every Filipino to the sea.

Now open to the public at the AIMS Museo Maritimo, the newly launched Philippine Maritime History Timeline Exhibit offers more than dates and historical facts. It tells a story — our story — as a nation shaped, sustained, and strengthened by the waters that surround us.

A Story Written by the Sea

For centuries, the Philippines has been defined by its maritime character. Long before modern ports and global shipping routes, early communities navigated vast waters in wooden balangays, built thriving coastal settlements, and established trade networks across Southeast Asia.

The new exhibit walks visitors through this journey in a way that feels both informative and personal. Carefully arranged in chronological order, the timeline traces key milestones — from pre-colonial seafaring traditions and colonial shipbuilding eras to modern maritime education and industry developments.

Instead of overwhelming guests with information, the display invites reflection: How did the sea influence who we are today? How did generations of Filipino seafarers help shape the country’s economic and cultural identity?

By presenting history as a continuous narrative, the exhibit offers a clearer, more meaningful appreciation of the Philippines as an archipelagic nation whose destiny has always been intertwined with the ocean.

A Shared Vision Brought to Life

Behind the exhibit is a team driven by purpose and passion. The project was made possible through the leadership of Mr. Juan Martin Guasch, whose guidance steered the initiative from concept to completion.

The visual storytelling was crafted by Mr. Anjo Undecimo, who led the creative layout and execution. Through thoughtful design and engaging presentation, he transformed historical milestones into an accessible and immersive experience for visitors.

The exhibit itself was envisioned by Dr. Arlene Abuid-Paderanga, who sought to create a space where maritime history could be appreciated not just by scholars and students, but by families, guests, and anyone curious about the nation’s seafaring roots.

More Than an Exhibit

For AIMS, this milestone installation is more than a commemorative project. It reflects the institution’s enduring commitment to maritime education and heritage preservation. As the school celebrates 32 years of excellence, the exhibit stands as a reminder that maritime learning is not confined to classrooms or simulators — it is also found in understanding the past that shaped today’s maritime professionals.

Visitors to the museum may find themselves lingering longer than expected — tracing events along the timeline, connecting stories across generations, and perhaps seeing their own family histories reflected in the broader narrative of Filipino seafarers.

An Invitation to Explore

AIMS Museo Maritimo warmly invites its personnel, stakeholders, partners, students, researchers, and the wider community to experience the Philippine Maritime History Timeline Exhibit at the AIMS Museo Maritimo.

Group visits and guided tours may be arranged through the museum’s official channels.

As National Arts Month and the institution’s Foundation Anniversary converge, AIMS celebrates not only its years of service but also the enduring maritime spirit of the Philippines — a heritage worth remembering, preserving, and proudly carrying forward.
