At AIMS Museo Maritimo, our work is deeply connected to the sea — not only as a space of history and heritage, but as a living system that sustains life, communities, and cultures around the world. Strengthening knowledge about the ocean is an essential part of protecting it.
We are pleased to share that members of the AIMS community can now explore the educational resources of the World Ocean Observatory (W2O). This opportunity was made possible through AIMS Museo Maritimo’s participation in the International Congress of Maritime Museums (ICMM), which has extended access to these valuable materials for its member institutions.
The World Ocean Observatory is dedicated to advancing ocean and climate awareness through free, science-based educational resources. Its materials are designed to help people better understand the ocean’s role in our planet’s health — and why its protection matters for the future of humanity.
W2O’s resources explore a wide range of interconnected topics, including climate change, freshwater systems, food security, maritime trade and transportation, governance, culture, and sustainability. Together, these themes highlight how closely human well-being is tied to the health of the ocean.
At a time when marine ecosystems face growing pressures — from climate change to pollution and unsustainable resource use — education plays a crucial role in fostering responsible stewardship. By making knowledge more accessible, W2O hopes to inspire individuals, educators, and communities to participate in meaningful efforts to protect and sustain our oceans.
The World Ocean Observatory is led by Peter Neill, a lifelong ocean advocate, author, and former president of the International Congress of Maritime Museums. Through his generosity, ICMM members have been granted free access to W2O’s digital education platform, opening new opportunities for learning and engagement.
We encourage students, educators, researchers, and members of the AIMS community to explore these resources and consider how they might be used in teaching, research, discussions, and initiatives that promote ocean conservation and sustainability.
Every informed voice contributes to the collective effort to care for our oceans. By learning more about the challenges and possibilities facing our seas, we take another step toward protecting them for generations to come. Explore the resources here:https://www.worldoceanobservatory.org/
