Every October 16, the world observes World Food Day, a special day that highlights the importance of food security, nutrition, and sustainable food systems. In 2026, the celebration carries the theme “Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow,” emphasizing the role of innovation, traditional knowledge, and collective action in building resilient food systems.
For AIMS Museo Maritimo, World Food Day also offers an opportunity to reflect on the enduring relationship between food and the sea. Throughout maritime history, oceans and waterways have provided communities with fish and other aquatic foods, while maritime trade and seafaring connected ports and societies through the exchange of food, ingredients, and culinary traditions.

The history of fishing communities, traditional boats, maritime trade routes, and food practices demonstrates how closely human sustenance has been connected to the maritime world. Today, this relationship continues to remind us of the importance of protecting marine ecosystems and promoting sustainable fisheries, which contribute to food security and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

On World Food Day, AIMS Museo Maritimo recognizes the sea not only as a space of travel and commerce, but also as an important source of nourishment, livelihood, culture, and heritage. By understanding our maritime past, we can better appreciate the responsibility we share in protecting the oceans that help nourish our future.
